A Peek at the Unique

Each spring since 2002, Zonta has planned and executed a guided home tour titled “A Peek at the Unique.” The annual tour takes guests on air-conditioned buses to four unique island homes, with seasoned guides providing information on each residence. The event is wildly popular, a sell-out since its inception. Zonta also enjoys fabulous support from island businesses and individuals who contribute in multiple ways including sponsorships and in-kind donations.

The question is often asked: "how does the Zonta Club choose the four island homes featured each year?" The answer involves skill and experience. The event is unlike any other home tour, on which one might merely see grand homes with exquisite furnishings. Instead, the “Peek” promises uniqueness, and while that may mean grand and exquisite, it may also mean sleek and modern or small and funky.

The key to “Peek” home selection is to start early, with these elements in mind. First: the vital element of uniqueness; next, homeowners willing to open their private spaces; thirdly, accessibility by motor coach—a challenge on Sanibel’s twisty, narrow and private roads. And finally, each selection must provide balance and contrast with the other three, an achievement which has helped the “Peek” become an annual ritual for more than 600 guests each year and raises up to $100,000 for Zonta’s service projects.

“Peek” proceeds have been enhanced over the years through the introduction of a major raffle, “Chances at the Unique,” a keepsake program packed with information and ads from sponsors, appeals to personal benefactors, and more. All profits are distributed through the Zonta Foundation of Southwest Florida/Sanibel-Captiva to organizations that work to improve the status of women.
