Educating and Supporting At-Risk Girls and Women

Overview:

The Zonta Club of Sanibel-Captiva provides grant support to the PACE Center for Girls of Lee County. One of 17 PACE centers in this unique Florida program for at-risk girls ages 12 – 18, the Lee County PACE Center operates a non-residential accredited alternative school in Fort Myers under guidelines set by the State and by the Lee County School District.

Mission:

The Fort Myers PACE Center enrolls up to 50 girls in a setting staffed for personalized counseling and individualized academic work. The girls come to PACE due to issues of school failure, truancy, substance abuse, domestic violence and neglect, parental conflict and foster care problems. Girls may stay a few months or a few years; their progress is tracked for three years once leaving PACE.

Zonta Partnership:

Zonta grant funds this year will support the addition of a new volunteer coordinator, ensuring smooth interaction for the wide range of tutors and area volunteers bringing programs and services to the girls and PACE.

Since August 2009, Zonta also has been advising a twice-monthly year-round Z-Club for high-school-grade PACE girls. Through Z-Club, the girls have learned about human trafficking, organized a Guatemalan beadwork sale, and created a “Door of Opportunity” art work.
